Although there are strengths to the different products, they are not necessarily needed when products that are found around the house can be just as effective in stopping dogs digging. There are different reasons that the dog start to dig in the first place, such as wanting to hide food, or digging just for fun. One simple product to stop dog digging is a garden hose. When the dog is in the yard, the owner should supervise the dog so that he can use the garden hose when the dog goes to dig. The dog should be sprayed by the garden hose every time he goes to dig the holes. The not so pleasant spraying of the hose will give them a negative reinforcement and digging will no longer be an enjoyable experience.
Chicken wire is another simple product to stop your dog from digging and you can get it at any home improvement store. You can hide the chicken wire just under the surface of the earth in a place where the dog is likely to dig. The dog will be stopped by the wire and will not like the feeling of his claws scraping over the wire. This will be a deterrent from digging in that area.
Toys works great when you are trying to teach your dog not to dig in the yard, it keeps them entertained. Dogs will be less likely to dig if they have toys to keep them entertained. There are lots of great dog toys out there that you can get, and even if you just get them a new one every now and again, they are going to have something new to have fun with.
One of the best things that you can do if you need to know how to stop a dog from digging is to take them for a walk. Even just a walk around the block is going to entertain them and get their mind off digging. Your really should be taking him for a walk as often as you can anyway.
You can always build a digging area for your dog so that he has his own place to dig, if you find these methods does not work. The only products needed are some sort of material to use as a border to the digging area and some nice soft soil filled with treats. Once the dog learns that the area is so delightful for digging, he will automatically want to dig there instead of the other places in the yard.
