Everyone knows that a German Shepherd dog is a terrific guard dog and very smart. It has also been noted that German Shepherd dogs are a very noble canine. This was recently highlighted once again in the news.

Friday’s expressway incident gives us one more reason to admire this wonderful breed of dog. A female German Shepherd was hit by a car and lay bleeding and helpless when another German Shepherd came on the scene, weaving its way through the traffic to the side of the injured Shepherd. This modern-day hero was there to protect its fellow canine, but in this case,  the mother of the hero. Against all odds and traffic, this hero barked and lunged at anyone who tried to help, holding off help until the officials were finally able to get to the injured Shepherd and transport it to the Vet for treatment.

This breed of dog possesses a unique instinct that has enabled them to become loyal companions and perform valiant acts of heroism for their owners, many of them treated like members of the family. There are many stories told of Shepherds jumping in water, pulling victims to safety and protecting their owners from attacks from thugs. But the most unique was the one in Argentina where a female saved a newborn child that was abandoned in a field by its 14 yr old mother, took it to its own litter of puppies and kept it warm until discovered by its owner. Another was in Florida where the canine chased a 200 lb bear that invaded their property up a tree.

No one knows what motivates these animals to do these heroic deeds but one thing is sure to be the human emotions they pick up from loving and caring owners, as well as the inborn instinct and some say, in females, hormones. Mixing It Up

Abruptly changing the direction you’re heading in may be enough distraction to make your dog understand that he needs to follow you. Whenever your dog tugs on the leash or begins to get ahead of you, abruptly turn and start walking in the opposite direction. When he obeys and returns to your side, be sure to follow up with praise and/or a small dog treat. Its pointless to scold your dog, catching him off guard and redirecting his attention is far more effective.

Your first couple of walks may actually be just a few steps, back and forth. Don’t get discouraged, repeat the process as many times as necessary until your dog understands what you want him to do. I hope that you understand why you should get a crate for your dog.  I hear so many people say that they are not going to put THEIR dog in a cage!  First, please don’t call it as a cage.  Think of it as a safehaven that your dog knows he can go to.  Remember, dogs are pack animals, even though we try and forget that!  When dogs were wild they slept together in dens.  Their homes underground were secure so others wouldn’t find them.  When they all slept together, there was always a feeling of security .  Their little homes were just big enough to be cozy and safe, and to sleep in peace.  That is why they feel so safe in their kennel.  They feel safe and secure and it is a cozy home for them to call only theirs.  You can also think of it as their own room, just as you have your own room.
