The AKC (American Kennel Club), which is the main breed registry in the US, divides dog breeds into 7 categories, plus the miscellaneous category. The seven classes of AKC recognized dog breeds are:

Most of the small dogs are in the toy class, but there are quite a number in the terrier class, and some in the non-sporting, sporting, hound, and herding categories. There are no official American Kennel Club recognized small dogs in the working class.
What Do These Groups Mean?
Most of the breeds in these categories share common characteristics. Some are classified due to practical skills like a great herding or hunting ability, (in the herding and hound groups). Others are there because of their size (toy dogs), or ancestry (terriers).
