You will have lots of options when looking for a puppy. You may be looking to buy a puppy or just adopt one for free. Although there are usually lots of puppies available, the real question is how to choose the right puppy. Here are a few things to be aware of, to ensure that you are happy with your choice.

The Origins of the German Shepherd

During the 19th century, in Germany, local communities would select and breed dogs with desirable qualities, such as obedience and intelligence, to aid in the job of herding and protecting sheep. The result was excellent sheepdogs, but they varied from one community to the next in appearance and ability. In an attempt to eradicate these differences, the Phylax Society was formed, in 1891, which aimed to standardize the dog breeds of Germany. Unfortunately, due to disagreements over the ideal traits of breeds, or what we would now call ‘artistic differences’, the Society lasted only three years.

However, the Phylax Society was influential in promoting the idea of standardized dog breeds. Consequently, Max von Stephanitz, who believed that dogs should be bred with the aim of acquiring excellent working animals, came across a dog that lived up to his ideal. He immediately purchased the dog, named it Horand von Grafrath and founded the Society for the German Shepherd Dog. Subsequently, Max von Stephanitz is credited with the creation of the breed.

A Change of Name

The breed was first exported to Britain in 1908. Oddly, the popularity of the breed increased after soldiers returning from World War I spoke enthusiastically about it. I say ‘oddly’, because, after the war, anti-German sentiment led the UK Kennel Club to change the breed’s name to Alsatian Wolf Hound. Eventually, the ‘Wolf Hound’ was lost and the breed became known simply as the Alsatian. It was not until 1977, that UK Kennel Clubs reverted to the name German Shepherd Dog.

Many of the above problems are self explanatory to resolve. Provide a bored dog with more toys and other things to keep him busy. Exercise your dog more if he is lacking in that respect. Escape artists might need to be confined to a crate if no one is home, or possibly a run could be designed for him.

For the remaining dogs that dig simply because they like it, the above solutions will not have much impact on their habit. For these dogs we need to look at other solutions.

The simplest option is to restrict the dog’s access to areas that he is prone to dig in, such as your garden or perennial bed. Whether by fencing the areas or other means this is the easier way to prevent digging.

The best way to stop the digging habit and protect your yard is to not allow the dog any unsupervised time outside. As long as he is actively supervised he will not have the opportunity to dig.

Another way to protect your plants and grass is to give him a designated area to dig. This could be required if you have a true blue digger, by redirecting his habit to a place that you deal with having dug up you can both win. If you do not have the space to provide a digging spot build a sandbox and fill it with sand and soil mixed together. Correct him if he tries to dig outside of his ‘zone’ and then let him have his fun in his space.

With some patience and a bit of trial and error your dog and your garden can live together in peace. you can be published without charge. You can to republish this article in your website or blog. Please provide links Active.

Despite the recession, it seems pet owners are not giving up on the welfare of their pets. This even extends to their pet food, and in the UK, it has recently been announced that pet owners are showing an increased willingness to spend extra money on the best food for their dogs and cats in 2009.

Benefits of Neutering Dogs

There have been many studies done on the pros and cons of spaying and neutering, and there is some debate about performing this procedure too early.

By neutering your male dog it may make for a better pet because some dogs (50%-60%) will be…

  • less assertive
  • more relaxed and less aggressive
  • other dogs are less likely to show aggression towards them
  • easier to handle
  • may stop marking territory in the house
  • less likely to roam

It also reduces the chance of non-cancerous prostate issues, testicular or anal tumors and hernia.

Spaying your female dog before her first heat will significantly reduce your pets chances of…

  • developing mammary cancer
  • uterine infections (which are common and can be serious and costly to treat),
  • false pregnancies
  • unwanted pregnancies

Risks of Neutering and Spaying

  • greater risk of hip dysplasia if done prior to 5 1/2 months and bone cancer if neutered before a year old (in larger breeds)
  • risk of hypothyroidism

With a female dog there is a greater chance of developing urinary incontinence as she ages, but this can be
treated. And there is a larger risk of prostate cancer for their male counterparts.

Big names are producing a wide variety of pet foods and making it easy for consumers to purchase these, with a broader use of sales avenues. As the traditional UK pet shops dwindle on the high street, the online community is thriving and there are top brand names in the world of pet food offering their products for sale online, at really reasonable prices. In fact, it is likely that the wider availability of pet foods online in the UK has led to this increase in spend from owners. Buying online makes it easy to re-order and stocking up inevitably saves on postage, as it is a one-off charge.

In good conscience should we be bringing more dogs into the world with not enough homes to accommodate them? Do we owe it to our pets to have them spayed or neutered rather than killing them off because they become overpopulated or an inconvenience to us? In just a few short years, one female dog and her offspring can be the source of thousands of puppies and one male running loose could impregnate many females in a short period of time.

If you are not going to show or breed your dog, seriously consider having them neutered and consult with your veterinarian on the benefits and safety of the procedure. There are those (puppy mill breeders who breed indiscriminately and sell in large volumes to pet stores) that will likely disagree with this but spaying and neutering dogs is argumentatively the best way to control the canine population

It just doesn't seems fair. Your doggie companion has been diagnosed with canine diabetes, and now he's having trouble with his sight. Unfortunately, cataracts in dogs are extremely common in dogs with diabetes. In fact, most canine diabetics will develop cataracts within a year of being diagnosed with this disease.

Mite infestations spread from dog to dog through close contact. While you should clean a dog's environment to make sure all mites are removed, most cases are from direct contact.

Symptoms of scabies on dogs usually appears on the elbows, ears, chest and abdomen. Signs are red bumps called papular eruptions, which can be extremely itchy. The bumps harden and become crusty if your dog keeps on itching them, In severe cases you may notice your dog becoming emaciated (thin, unhealthy.

It may not be obvious before surgery whether the tumor is benign or malignant. If radiographs and ultrasound show spread of tumor to other organs, the tumor is malignant.

If no tumor spread is visible, the mass may or may not be benign. Where the tumor spread is too small to be seen, it may not be obvious if it is benign or malignant until the abdomen is opened.

Treatment for dog spleen tumor

For both benign and malignant tumors, the recommended treatment is splenectomy. If the cancer spread is minimal, chemotherapy following surgery may prolong the dog's life span.

To prevent scabies in dogs, you should limit contact with other dogs that may have the condition. Dogs that have scabies should be keep away from other dogs until cured
